Do you have great online content?

So you have a new website and you’ve set up a Facebook and Twitter account for your business, but it’s not going as well as you’d hoped. That is because you need to have great content on these sites to keep people interested, and to provide value to your audience to keep them coming back for more. Below are some ways to help you write amazing attention grabbing content.

Lose the sales pitch
If your content isn’t trying to pressure the reader to sell, the reader will be more likely to continue reading. You can still use the content that you use in your direct marketing material, just take out anything that is trying to sell your product. You may have to re-word some parts and add a little more content, but the result will be a relevant engaging message for your customer. You could adapt a press release announcing your new product, into a blog post addressing the issues your product attempts to solve, and how this problem can be overcome.

Multimedia is multipurpose
Multimedia material greatly increases the flexibility of your content. A photo on Instagram can be added into your blog post, uploaded to Facebook as a thumbnail on your latest status. Video is another great multimedia tool. Your video can be uploaded to your YouTube channel, embedded into blog posts and e-newsletters, can be turned into thumbnails for Facebook, linked on Twitter and can be turned into podcasts. All of these channels have sharing opportunities which further increases exposure for your company.

Hyperlink your content
Use hyperlinks to link back to older content that is relevant to the new content. For example a legal firm could be writing an article about Wills, and mention power of attorney in the article. It would be really helpful if there was a link to an article that was written a year ago about Power of Attorneys. This not only benefits the reader, but encourages them to engage in more of your content and more of your website.

Discovery platforms
Discovery platforms can be used to recommend similar content to readers. This works as a pay per click system and can be on your site or other websites. When people read content that is related to yours, your content comes up as a suggested read. Popular discovery platforms are Outbrain and Taboola.

The main thing to remember when writing content is to take a walk in your readers’ shoes. Ask yourself if the content is valuable, if it is helpful and if you would read further posts.
